Mike Tyson is fighting Saturday night. Who cares?
The undercard, however, has an interesting fight. Zab Judah is a reasonably promising boxer in the junior welterweight division. He's beaten "Irish" Mickey Ward. He's fighting Wilfredo Negron, who is fighting a little above his Super Featherweight (130 lbs.) limit.
Judah is promoted by Main Events. Main Events is the Duva company. You know, Dan Duva, the ugliest man in boxing -- and really a great trainer -- and his sons. The Duvas have gotten ahold of the Tyson undercard, and they are using it to showcase the most promising, but unproven, boxer in their stable.
The last time the Duvas had such a promising boxer, one who looked like he was ready for international attention, was with Jesus Chavez in 1997. Who was Chavez' opponent in his breakout fight? Wilfredo Negron! Guess what...Chavez won handily.
This is a much better bet than what you can get on Tyson. Problem is, who's going to take your money? We haven't been able to find a line on this fight, though we would probably put it at Judah -350, Negron +200. It might take a few extra phone calls to get this one down, but it is proabably worth it.
We know that we've slid into horse racing territory here. We're betting the promoter (owner) and trainer rather than the fighter. But Judah really is unproven. The Duvas are taking the risk that their up-and-comer may be knocked out in the early rounds. But then again, Dino Duva needs a win to show that he can fill the shoes of his bother Dan, who tragically died young from a heart attack last year. Main Events has confidence in Zab Judah. So should you.
